Dominic Thiem could face Jannik Sinner in Lyon quarter-final

Top seed Dominic Thiem has been handed a difficult draw in Lyon whilst Stefanos Tsitsipas should have a smoother route to the latter stages.

Dominic Thiem, who was handed a wildcard for the ATP 250 event, will begin his campaign against either home favourite Corentin Moutet or British star Cameron Norrie, who has had an impressive clay season to date.

Should the Austrian prevail, he will likely play the winner of an intriguing first round matchup between unseeded stars Jannik Sinner and Aslan Karatsev.

If Thiem is to reach the semi-final stage, he is likely to face number 3 seed and good friend Diego Schwartzman before a possible meeting with Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final.

The Greek has a much simpler route to the final in the East of France, taking on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Tommy Paul in his opener before a possible clash with NextGen talent Ugo Humbert.

Awaiting Tsitsipas in the semi-finals could be number four seed David Goffin, though a more likely opponent comes in the form of 26-year-old Lorenzo Sonego, who reached his first ever Masters 1000 semi-final in Rome this week.

Should the top two seeds meet in the final, it will be their ninth ever meeting, with Thiem winning six of their encounters.

The pair have only met twice on the clay surface, with Tsitsipas defeating the Austrian in straight sets in Barcelona in 2018 before Thiem got his revenge at Roland Garros just weeks later, winning by three sets to one.

The Lyon main draw will get underway on 17 May.
