Cameron Norrie ecstatic after ‘huge’ win in Miami


British No 2 Cameron Norrie achieved one of the biggest wins of his career so far to reach the third round at the Miami Open. 

Norrie overcame ninth seed and Australian Open quarter-finalist Grigor Dimitrov in straight sets 7-5 7-5 to claim his second win against a Top 20 opponent this season.

The Bulgarian started the match confidently and quickly raced into a 5-3 lead before Norrie rallied to take four consecutive games without conceding a set point.

In a closely fought second set with little to separate the pair, Norrie clinched the decisive break to love in the 11th game before holding impressively to clinch victory.

The difference between the pair rested in the serving department, with the Brit possessing a first serve percentage of around 78% and winning 71% of first serve points.

Cameron Norrie was also more successful on his second serve, winning 53% compared to Dimitrov, who won just 37% of his second serve points.

“It’s huge,” said Norrie. “He’s really good on the hard courts. He’s had a good start to the year. It was such a physical match at the start.

“He came out really fast and he set the tone at the beginning of the match. Massive one for me and I take a lot of confidence from it.”

With his victory over the World No 16, Norrie has also now defeated three top 20 opponents since last year’s US Open. He will now face 22nd seed Taylor Fritz in the third round.
