The Russian cruised through the opening set but was pushed in the second before securing a 6-0 7-6 (7/5) triumph.

She will next meet fourth seed Shvedova, who overcame Tatjana Malek 7-6 (7/4) 6-1.

Two unseeded players have progressed to the last four from the bottom half of the draw.

And one of them – Thailand’s Tamarine Tanasugarn – carries the hopes of the home fans after seeing off Russia’s Anna Chakvetadze 6-1 6-4.

Tanasugarn will play Sesil Karatantcheva for a place in the final.

Karatantcheva edged out Ekaterina Bychkova 7-5 4-6 7-5 in a tough encounter.
