The fifth-seeded Czech dropped the first set before winning a pair of tiebreakers to advance 3-6 7-6 (9/7) 7-6 (7/5) against her Italian foe at the $220,000 claycourt event.

Edina Gallovits of Romania cruised to a 6-2 6-2 victory over Czech Barbora Zahlavova Strycova in 78 minutes and will face Zakopalova in the second round.

Another Czech, Petra Cetkovska, defeated countrywoman Sandra Zahlavova 7-5 6-2 by holding off six of seven break chances while converting five of her 13 opportunities.

The weather caused the suspension of sixth-seeded Mathilde Johansson’s match with Catalina Castano. Johansson was trailing 6-7 (2/7) 0-1.

A pair of matches were postponed due to rain. Fourth-seeded Nuria Llagostera Vives will take on Olga Savchuk Tuesday while Maria Emilia Salerni and Maret Ani will also face off among other scheduled matches.
