Also on Monday, Dmitry Tursunov came from a set down to overcome fellow Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili on his tournament debut.

The 26-year-old world number 29 powered down 11 aces and saved five break-points en route to a 3-6 6-2 6-2 triumph in one hour 40 minutes.

Czech Republic’s Jan Hernych also needed three sets before eventually prevailing 6-3 3-6 6-4 against Belgian Kristof Vliegen.
