Youzhny falls in first round

The fourth-seeded Russian was narrowly edged out by his Ukrainian opponent in the opening set, but his game then crumbled as he fell to a 7-6 (13-11) 6-2 loss.

Sixth seed Albert Montanes was also ousted, Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis besting the Spaniard 6-2 7-5.

Fifth seed Victor Troicki fared better in his first-round contest, the Serbian seeing off Spain’s Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-1 7-5, while seventh seed Ivo Karloviv won 6-4 6-4 against Fabio Fognini.

Olivier Rochus of Belgium routed local wild card Abdulla Hajji 6-1 6-0, while Evgeny Korolev also looked comfortable in his 6-2 6-3 victory over Argentinian Martin Vassallo Arguello.

Other first-round winners included Switzerland’s Marco Chiudinelli and Potito Starace of Italy.
