It was a surprisingly difficult match for top seed Wozniacki as she reached her first WTA semi-final of the season. The Dane won the first three titles of her career last year and climbed to a career-high ranking of 12th.

The 18-year-old’s next opponent will be fourth seed Anne Keothavong, who posted a 6-2 1-6 6-2 victory over fifth seed Marina Erakovic of New Zealand.

Sixth-seeded German Sabine Lisicki continued her push towards a first title with a 6-3 6-4 win over third seed Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic.

The world number 61 will face second seed Victoria Azarenka, who advanced with a 6-4 6-2 win over eighth seed Pauline Parmentier of France.
