Wimbledon have a big dilemma on their hands after Maja Chwalinska reaches the Roland Garros final

Maja Chwalinska has given Wimbledon a lot to think about after reaching the Roland Garros final.

There have been many shocks at Roland Garros this year, including Jannik Sinner losing to Juan Manuel Cerundolo, but no-one was expecting Chwalinska to be anywhere near the final.

Coming into Roland Garros this year, Chwalinska had only ever won one Grand Slam main draw match before and she is now within a win of becoming a major champion.

Chwalinska is set to skyrocket in the rankings after her run in Roland Garros, but she is currently not entitled to play in the main draw of Wimbledon.

Maja Chwalinska is now in contention for a Wimbledon wildcard

Chwalinska had never even played a main draw match at Roland Garros before this year, and was coming into the tournament as the world number 114.

Who will win the French Open final – Mirra Andreeva or Maja Chwalinska?

The final nobody expected…

After a comfortable route through qualifying, Chwalinska was handed a tricky first round draw to play Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng.

Despite being the big underdog in this match, Chwalinska handily beat an emotional Qinwen Zheng in just her second ever Grand Slam main draw win.

This really set the tone for Chwalinska, who has reached the Roland Garros final by dropping just one set.

As a result of her breakthrough run in Paris, Chwalinska has now confirmed that she will make a huge jump up the rankings to world number 21.

This ranking would enable Chwalinska to be seeded at Wimbledon, but due to her ranking at the time of the entry list cut-off she is currently only able to play qualifying at the grass court major.

Chwalinska is likely to request a wildcard following her run at Roland Garros this year, leaving Wimbledon with a big dilemma as to whether to give her one.

Why Wimbledon are unlikely to give Maja Chwalinska a wildcard

While Chwalinska’s results at Roland Garros have given her a strong argument for a wildcard at Wimbledon this year, previous actions suggest that she may not get one.

Last year, wildcard Lois Boisson beat the likes of Jessica Pegula and Mirra Andreeva to reach the Roland Garros semi-finals in a breakthrough run.

This put Boisson in a very similar situation to the one Chwalinska is now, but was not awarded a wildcard by Wimbledon and subsequently lost in the first round of qualifying.

Wimbledon are likely to prioritise British players over Chwalinska, as well as the likes of Venus Williams and even potentially the returning Serena Williams, who has not confirmed if she will play singles on grass.

However, Chwalinska may force Wimbledon’s hand if she is to win the Roland Garros title, which would almost give them no chance but to reward her for her success in Paris.

Who is the most shocking Grand Slam champion ever?

You never know what might happen…

While Chwalinska may still have to go down the qualifying route once again at Wimbledon, she certainly will not have to do so at the US Open, where she will gain direct entry to a Grand Slam for the first time.

Chwalinska’s newfound status will also give her direct entry to upcoming WTA tournaments, which will give her the opportunity to continue rising up the rankings.
