It will be the third time the American has finished the season on top after clinching the year-end No.1 ranking in 2002 and 2009.

Victory at the US Open was her 55th career title – and her ninth of the year – surpassing her previous best of eight in 2002. She also has Justine Henin’s record of 10 singles titles from 2007 in her sights.

Williams became the oldest world No.1 when she usurped Victoria Azarenka at the top of the WTA rankings in February, and with just four defeats from 71 matches this season, has banked over $9 million in prize money this season.

"Serena has proven time and time again throughout her career that she is an incredible champion, both on and off the court," WTA chief Stacey Allaster said. "This season she continues to rewrite the record books, proving she is one of the sport's greatest athletes of all time."

Williams, who celebrated her 32nd birthday on Thursday, will be presented with her Year-End No.1 trophy at the TEB BNP Paribas WTA Championships in Istanbul next month.
