In the day’s other main matches, 10th seed Flavia Pennetta, from Italy, beat Chinese wild card Han Xinyun 7-6 (7/2) 6-2.

However, 15th seed Samantha Stosur is out after the Australian was beaten 6-4 4-6 6-3 by Frenchwoman Alize Cornet.

Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is through after she beat Sybille Bammer of Austria 7-5 6-1.
