Both players are using the annual exhibition event as their only warm-up before the first grand slam of the year, the Australian Open, which begins in Melbourne on January 19.

“I started off really well, she is a great player, but I had a good start and it put some pressure on her,” said Venus, who beat Jankovic on her way to winning the season-ending Tour Championship in Doha in November. “Now I want to take this form into the rest of the year.”
