Novak Djokovic recently made a frank admission regarding his future.
The Serbian superstar, a winner of 24 major titles, admitted that he is ‘closer than ever’ to retiring from tennis following his defeat to Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon semi-finals.
“I still feel that I can compete at the highest level; however, that moment is closer than ever,” Djokovic told ESPN earlier this week.

Djokovic has been searching for a 25th Grand Slam title for the best part of three years; a title that would see him overtake Margaret Court as the winningest Grand Slam champion of all time.

The US Open has played host to a number of unusual men’s singles results over the past 20 years.
The final Grand Slam of the year seems to be the major event that springs the most surprises, as demonstrated by the early departures of Novak Djokovic at the 2024 US Open and Carlos Alcaraz and the 2023 event.
A number of unexpected champions have also emerged over the past two decades, including Juan Martin del Potro in 2009, Marin Cilic in 2014, and Dominic Thiem in 2020.
The US Open is the major event where players across the Tour are at their most vulnerable; especially those competing at the highest level week-in week-out throughout the year.
Therefore, Djokovic could take advantage of this collective wear and tear and emerge as a victor at this year’s New York event.

The Serbian superstar, then 36 years old, became the oldest champion in tournament history after beating Daniil Medvedev 6–3, 7–6, 6–3 in the final.

He also tied Margaret Court’s record of 24 Grand Slam singles titles.

“To make the history of this sport is something truly remarkable and special,” Djokovic said in his post-match remarks. “I never imagined that I would be here talking about 24 Slams.
“I never thought that would be the reality, but the last couple of years I felt I have a chance, I have a shot at history—and why not grab it if it’s presented.”
