Katie Boulter’s impressive start to the 2026 season has resulted in her taking a big leap in the WTA rankings.
Boulter struggled for form throughout 2025, falling out of the world’s top 100 players in December.
However, the British star has since regained her form, capturing her fourth career title at the Ostrava Open in Czechia.
What is stopping Katie Boulter from staying in the WTA top 20?
Boulter’s strong start continued in Mexico, where she reached the quarter-finals before losing to Jasmine Paolini.
As a result, Boulter has risen to world number 65, and could rise even higher – should she register a strong performance in Indian Wells.
Katie Boulter has a big opportunity in Indian Wells
Katie Boulter will begin her Indian Wells campaign against Viktoriya Tomova in the qualifying draw.
Boulter, the top seed in qualifying, will then face Victoria Jimenez Kasintseva or Lucrezia Stefanini for a place in the main draw.
From there, Boulter would have the opportunity to better her performance at last year’s event, when she made the second round of the main draw before losing to Elena Rybakina.

When taking Boulter’s form into consideration, the sky is the limit.
Boulter has been in excellent form, and the 29-year-old should not let her lower ranking stop her from challenging some of the WTA’s biggest names in California.
If the 29-year-old were to piece together a strong run in California, she would dramatically increase her chances of being a seeded player at the French Open.
Boulter has not been a seed at a Grand Slam since the 2025 Australian Open, and yet she is still a player capable of beating those at the top of the WTA food chain.
Boulter demonstrated this last year when she stunned Paula Badosa in the Wimbledon first round, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4.
If Boulter were to do the unthinkable and win the 2026 Indian Wells Open, she would gain 965 WTA ranking points [including qualifying points].

Katie Boulter’s loss to Elena Rybakina at Indian Wells
Katie Boulter met Elena Rybakina in the Indian Wells second round after beating Irina-Camelia Begu in the first round.
Rybakina emerged victorious from the contest, beating the British star 6-0, 7-5 in California.
The Kazakhstani star went on to lose in the next round to 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva, who ended up winning the tournament.
Do you think women should play best-of-five set matches?
It was the second time Boulter and Rybakina had played each other. In their first meeting at the 2023 Wimbledon Championships, Rybakina comfortably defeated the Brit 6-1, 6-1 in the third round.
