Why Frances Tiafoe was ‘super annoyed’ with one fan during his latest Indian Wells victory

Frances Tiafoe produced an excellent display to defeat Flavio Cobolli in Indian Wells on Sunday evening.

Tiafoe avenged his recent loss to Coboli in the Acapulco Open final, beating the Italian 6-1, 6-2 in California.

Tiafoe, who endured a difficult 2025 season, has improved his form at the start of this year – as demonstrated by his performances in Mexico and California.

While the American is widely considered to be one of the most friendly and respected figures on the Tour, he is far from immune to all the noise that comes with being a professional tennis player.

This was highlighted after his match against Cobolli, when the American expressed his dismay regarding the behaviour of a fan in the crowd.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Tiafoe expressed his dismay at one fan who was talking and holding a walkie talkie.

“I would like constant noise, I mean, constant noise and kind of tennis background noise,” Tiafoe began.

“When it’s super quiet and there’s no — it was like today was kind of quiet, and there was someone in the crowd with a walkie talkie talking, I was super annoyed.

“But, you know, you go to the NBA games, soccer games, whatever the case may be, there’s so much noise. Even as a fan you don’t even notice it because you’re into the game and whatever.

“Tennis is getting more and more like that. Obviously I think the umps are letting it go a little more, tournaments are trying to let it go more. I think the Open is uncontrollable. It’s the best.”

A reporter then asked: “How important is it as a player to be able to hear the shots you’re making with your timing and that kind of thing?”

Tiafoe replied: “Yeah, I think it matters, because the way you react to a ball, you know, if it hit really big off a guy’s racquet, you know it’s coming big, and I think that matters.

“I think regardless, you’re going to hear it, you know, you’re so dialed in on the task at hand. But yeah, I mean, it’s a little catch and go.”

Tiafoe makes an interesting point regarding the atmosphere during professional tennis matches.

While some tournaments, like Wimbledon, advocate for quiet during points, other events like the US Open, have put less emphasis on maintaining hushed atmospheres.

Other American sports, like the NBA and NFL, are constantly noisy, as are football matches.

Frances Tiafoe’s next opponent

In the next round, Tiafoe is set to play Alexander Zverev, who came through a tough three-set battle against Brandon Nakashima on Sunday.

Tiafoe has an underwhelming record against the German, winning only one match in nine attempts.

Tiafoe’s sole win against Zverev came at the 2017 Cincinnati Masters. Since then, Zverev has won six consecutive matches against the American.

Zverev last defeated Tiafoe at the 2024 Laver Cup, 6-7, 7-5, 10-5.

The winner of Tiafoe and Zverev will play Felix Auger-Aliassime or Arthur Fils in the Indian Wells quarter-finals.
