Why Carlos Alcaraz’s early Miami exit could actually end up benefitting him

Carlos Alcaraz’s hopes of winning the Miami Open title for a second time were left in tatters on Sunday.

The Spaniard had come into the tournament hoping to bounce back from his surprise defeat to Daniil Medvedev in Indian Wells.

And it looked as if Alcaraz would go far in Miami after a comprehensive victory over rising Brazilian star Joao Fonseca.

However, Alcaraz’s hopes of Floridian success were quickly extinguished by Sebastian Korda, who defeated the Spaniard 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

It was a disappointing defeat for Alcaraz; but one that has opened up a window of opportunity.

Carlos Alcaraz’s Miami Open exit is a blessing in disguise

Just failing to win either Indian Wells or Miami, Carlos Alcaraz improved upon his Sunshine Swing performance from last year.

Last year, the Spaniard reached the semi-finals of Indian Wells, before being knocked out in the Miami second round by David Goffin.

This year, Alcaraz again reached the Indian Wells last four, before reaching the Miami Open third round.

Alcaraz most certainly missed the opportunity to strengthen his position as the world number one; yet, another opportunity has presented itself to the Spaniard.

In summary, Alcaraz now has an extended period of rest ahead of an extremely busy – and important – clay-court swing.

Alcaraz is defending an incredibly large number of ranking points during the swing after winning the Monte-Carlo Masters, Italian Open and French Open last year.

After winning those 2025 events [and finishing runner-up in Barcelona], the Spaniard is defending 4,330 ATP ranking points across the 2026 clay-court swing.

Therefore, although Alcaraz will certainly be disappointed to have exited Miami so early, the extra time to prepare for the red dirt could prove invaluable later down the line.

What did Carlos Alcaraz say after winning the 2025 Monte-Carlo Masters?

Carlos Alcaraz found himself in a similar situation last year after losing to David Goffin in the Miami Open second round.

The extra recovery time paid off, as Alcaraz went on to win his next event in Monaco.

The Spaniard, who went on to dominate the clay-court swing, defeated Lorenzo Musetti 3-6, 6-1, 6-0.

Musetti, playing in his first Masters 1000 final, struggled with a right leg injury in the third set and received treatment while down 0-3.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Alcaraz said: “Well, I think today was about who is going to or who was going to deal with the nerves much better, the pressure. He played his first Masters 1000 final, a huge moment for him.

“For me, as well, because as I say, it was a difficult month for me. And being in a final, I just put pressure on myself. There were a lot of nerves.

“So at the beginning, it was about who was going to deal with the nerves and the pressure much better. I think he did it pretty well. Much better than I did.

“Tactically, I didn’t play well. So I just was playing probably to his best shot and missing first, second shot, almost in every point making a lot of mistakes, let’s say. I had to change it. I had to change the situations.

“I changed tactically a little bit, making more rallies. I tried not to make many mistakes and just get in the good rhythm again. I think that I played well.

“At the beginning of the second set, I think I started the set really strong. It helped me a lot to get into the match and get to the good rhythm again.

Can Carlos Alcaraz win MORE Grand Slams than Novak Djokovic? 🤔

“After that, you know, in the middle of the second set, I think he got injured. So it was disappointing, I think, for him for sure. It wasn’t good for him, for his people.

“But I have to say that I feel sorry for him, but I’m pretty sure he’s gonna reach these rounds more than once, because the level he reach it didn’t surprise at all, because I know he’s doing the right things, he’s putting good work every day, and we’re gonna see Lorenzo Musetti in this position more often.”
