Meet Talia Gibson: Australia’s newest WTA star
Talia Gibson began her career, as many do, by playing junior tennis; and she achieved an ITF junior ranking of world number 39.
The 21-year-old made her WTA Tour debut at the Hobart International as a wildcard, losing to German player Tatjana Maria in the first round.

After winning consecutive ITF titles in 2024, Gibson secured her first Grand Slam main draw win in 2025, defeating world number 94 Zeynep Sönmez in the Australian Open first round.
Earlier this year, Gibson paired with compatriot Kimberly Birrell at the Australian Open, and the pair reached the women’s doubles quarter-finals.
In Indian Wells, Gibson has enjoyed her most successful singles campaign to date.
By beating Paolini on Tuesday, Gibson has become the first Australian to reach the quarter-final in her maiden Tier I/WTA-1000 main draw, and the youngest overall since Elena Rybakina in Wuhan in 2019; as per OptaAce.

OptaAce have also reported that Gibson is one of four qualifiers since 2009 to claim three or more WTA top-20 wins at a WTA-1000 event.
The other three were: Simona Halep at the 2013 Italian Open, Caroline Garcia at the 2022 Cincinnati Open, and Anna Kalinskaya at the 2024 Dubai Tennis Championships.
Who will Talia Gibson play next in Indian Wells?
Gibson is set to play fellow 21-year-old Linda Noskova in the Indian Wells quarter-finals.
Noskova, ranked 14th in the world, defeated Alexandra Eala 6-2, 6-0 on Tuesday.
Noskova is one of the brightest young stars on the Tour and already has an impressive WTA resume. The Czech player is a former French Open junior champion and has one WTA Tour title to her name: the 2024 Monterrey Open.
If you were in charge of tennis, what is the first rule you would change?
Noskova also reached the 2025 China Open final, before losing to Amanda Anisimova.
Gibson and Noskova have never played each other before on the WTA Tour.
