Roger Federer was shocked in the fourth round of the US Open in 2018 at the hands of John Millman.

Federer was the second seed of the tournament, but he found himself losing in five sets to the unseeded Millman.

The four-time US Open champion tasted his only defeat to the Australian, a result that would never happen again on the ATP Tour.

After the loss, Federer criticised the conditions on Arthur Ashe court as his Grand Slam campaign came to an end.

Roger Federer was unhappy with the US Open conditions in 2018

Federer’s match against Millman took place in sticky conditions as the humidity rose in the early hours of the morning in New York.

The Swiss star struggled to deal with the intensity and slammed the conditions after he was knocked out of the competition.

In his US Open press conference, he said: “I felt I couldn’t get air. There was no circulation at all.  It’s uncomfortable.

“Clearly you just keep on sweating more and more and more and more as the match goes on. You lose energy as it goes by. At some point also I was just happy that the match was over, I guess.

“I think just that makes it a totally different US Open. Plus conditions maybe were playing slower this year on top of it.

“You have soaking wet pants, soaking wet everything. The balls are in there, too. You try to play. Everything gets slower as you try to hit winners.”

Federer struggled at the American Grand Slam from 2008 onward, after winning 40 consecutive matches between 2004 and 2008.

Federer lost to the likes of Tommy Robredo, Novak Djokovic, Tomas Berdych, and Marin Cilic at the US Open following 2008.

The Swiss star has only reached two finals since his landmark four consecutive victories between 2004 and 2008.

The star lost in the final to Juan Martin del Potro in 2009, which earned the Argentine his sole Grand Slam career victory.

Federer’s only other final at the American Grand Slam came in 2015, when he lost in four sets to Djokovic in the final.
