When John McEnroe was left baffled by Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi’s Davis Cup decision in 1996

John McEnroe is clearly a patriotic individual, which would explain his long-held relationship with the Davis Cup throughout his career.

The American won a remarkable five titles at this international team tournament and has spoken glowingly about it both during his playing days and since retiring.

After all, even today, he remains arguably the greatest player in US Davis Cup history.

However, back in 1996, that pride spilt over into frustration due to the actions of two of his top-level compatriots.

He did not hold back in his assessment of Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi.

When John McEnroe reacted to Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi’s Davis Cup snub

Speaking after the withdrawal of four top-10-ranked Americans to play in the second round in April 1996, he argued: “For the life of me, I don’t understand why players wouldn’t want to do it.”

This was prompted not just by Agassi and Sampras’ withdrawal, but also by Michael Chang and Jim Courier who followed suit.

John McEnroe continued his tirade, noting: “It’s the same old, same old thing that we have been hearing for years. Scheduling is a problem and makes it difficult for the players, but at the same time, ultimately this is Davis Cup where you represent your country.

“I’m not going to say that these guys don’t care, but ultimately there is no just no explanation for it that’s acceptable.

“It has soured me in a sense, because I don’t want to go around begging guys to play. To me, that should be the easy part. The tough part should be picking who is going to play.”

Since then, plenty of big-name stars have criticised the Davis Cup’s format change, which sparked even more top players to opt out of representing their country.

Ironically, just last week saw Carlos Alcaraz join McEnroe and Sampras on an elite list, as this present-day superstar starts to catch up with the legends of the past.

John McEnroe’s Davis Cup legacy

To this day, McEnroe still holds so many historic records relating to the United States’ Davis Cup pursuits.

This likely explains why he feels so strongly about participation from the country’s top players.

John McEnroe’s Davis Cup titles

When it comes to singles, no American has played more matches (49), or won more matches (4) than him, and has the most total victories in US Davis Cup history too (59).

His legacy will likely be one that lasts for many years to come, as more and more top players continue to opt out of representing their country in favour of prolonging their own careers.

There are very few stars made like McEnroe anymore, who relish and even prioritise the opportunity to represent their country.
