When Frances Tiafoe was accused of ‘disrespect’ and told he ‘went too far’ by Jannik Sinner back in 2021

Frances Tiafoe and Jannik Sinner are two top-level tennis players who boast very different on-court demeanours.

The former is brash, loud and energetic, and he loves to involve the crowd in his activities. As such, he draws huge support, particularly when competing in America.

Jannik Sinner, meanwhile, is more calm and calculated, preferring to swiftly disassemble his opponents with ruthless ball striking.

At times, both have enjoyed success, but it’s fair to say that the Italian has taken a hefty lead in their respective careers.

However, there was once a point where many expected them to fight for elite honours side by side, with their 2021 meeting in Vienna a particular flashpoint that exhibited the closeness of their budding rivalry.

What Frances Tiafoe did that left Jannik Sinner furious

And, what was even more enticing about this clash was the vitriol and bitterness that was born of the match.

Down a break in the deciding third set, with Sinner serving, Frances Tiafoe called out as his opponent served.

It marked a minor annoyance, but one that unravelled the now-world number one’s game, causing him to be broken, and allowing Tiafoe to win the match.

Afterwards, Sinner did not hold back in his assessment of the American’s actions, claiming: “In my opinion, today Tiafoe went too far, has done too much.

“It is one thing when the player tries to put on a show to put on a bit of a show, but it is quite another when you start to disrespect.”

Frances Tiafoe’s head-to-head record vs Jannik Sinner

Since that match, Tiafoe has actually yet to record a victory over Sinner. This marks a searing indication of how their respective careers have fared since then.

After all, the 23-year-old has gone on to win four Grand Slam titles, becoming a near-unstoppable force on hard courts.

Just last year, he even beat Tiafoe in just their second meeting since that bitter Vienna clash, crushing him in the Cincinnati Open final.

His rise has been meteoric, while the 27-year-old has struggled for consistency despite impressing in moments. Tiafoe was knocked out of Wimbledon early by Cam Norrie, as just another example of the kind of shock defeat we have become accustomed to seeing from him.

It feels like it will take a monumental task for anyone to topple Sinner at the moment, with Tiafoe one hopeful who will see the task only get tougher as time goes on.
