Emma Raducanu is in a curious position at the moment which has the entire tennis world scratching their head.
After all, despite clearly boasting an abundance of talent, she simply cannot seem to get fit.
Whether it be illness or injury, the former British number one continues to be struck down with ailment after ailment, and her career is suffering for it.
Her latest absence from the sport is related to the former and has led many to wonder exactly why she keeps suffering these health issues, which are preventing her from playing.
At last, after so much silence on the matter, some information has come to light about what we can expect from Emma Raducanu in the coming weeks.
Update on Emma Raducanu’s condition and why she has missed so much tennis
What makes this insight even more crucial is the fact that she has now not played a competitive match for over a month, since Amanda Anisimova beat her handily at Indian Wells.
It is common knowledge that Raducanu picked up a viral infection in Cluj on her way to her first final since the 2021 US Open.
Where do you think Emma Raducanu will finish 2026 ranked?
However, it’s uncertain how it is impacting her, and when she might return.
Fortunately, this latest update provides a hopeful answer to the latter, as it’s noted that Raducanu is looking at the Italian Open as the event where she will make her comeback.
This gives her two weeks of training, having taken time off from playing any tennis at all recently.
Apparently, according to her representatives, she has only recently returned to practice, and the focus is now on gaining match fitness rather than healing from illness.
As such, Raducanu will not play at the Madrid Open, joining Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic in withdrawing.
What Emma Raducanu said about her health after her most recent match
Speaking after that aforementioned 6-1, 6-1 loss to Anisimova, Raducanu spoke about her current level.
It was clear just how much this illness was impacting her, rendering her powerless against the big-hitting American who starred in 2025.
Raducanu admitted: “I need to obviously be aggressive when playing those players, but I think there’s still a long way to go to be doing that, and I need to use my strengths and probably mix it up a bit more.”
Who do YOU think will win the Madrid Open? 💭
That lack of power could be due to a lack of preparation, but illness certainly won’t have helped in that situation either.
Unfortunately, there is no quick fix to an issue like that either, only rest and recovery.
Hopefully, after so long out, Raducanu is ready to return reinvigorated and ready to compete once again, unencumbered by physical issues.
