Andy Murray has always been an outspoken individual, but his expressions have often been well-thought-out and insightful.

He has defended those in need and stood up for what is right on so many occasions that it has become commonplace to associate the Scotsman with kindness within tennis.

However, some chair umpires might not agree with that sentiment.

After all, over the course of his glittering career, they have often been on the receiving end of some explosive outbursts regarding plenty of grievances.

Playing any sport at the top level is always bound to elicit some unsavoury emotions, but Andy Murray was justified in feeling particularly frustrated when having to face Rafael Nadal on clay in 2013.

Why Andy Murray was accused of having ‘zero respect’ by the chair umpire

Ironically, it was Nadal’s conduct on that day which spurred on this particular rant, leading the chair umpire to argue he had ‘zero respect’.

As his gruelling, hard-fought match against the Spaniard in the 2013 Monte-Carlo Masters semi-final went on, he headed over to Damien Dumusois in the chair to take issue with his opponent.

After all, he had been taking plenty of time between points, one time even taking 31 seconds to serve. The allotted time was just 25 seconds.

“It’s fascinating what you let some of these guys get away with,” Murray began, before later lofting a ball in his direction after he had checked a line call.

“You have zero respect for me,” the umpire said at one changeover, prompting the Scotsman to reply: “Don’t just make stuff up.”

Dumusois then added: “You can disagree, but no respect, I cannot accept that.”

When Andy Murray schooled Rafael Nadal on clay in 2015

Murray’s intense and close-fought affair with Nadal marked another golden opportunity spurned to claim a famous win over the 22-time Grand Slam champion on his favoured surface.

After all, just the year prior, he had dismantled one of his legendary rivals in the Madrid Open final, schooling Nadal 6-3, 6-2.

In the first set of that phenomenal showing, he broke twice to race into a 4-0 lead, and regularly won most of the lengthy rallies.

He displayed similar levels of professionalism in the second set, and admitted afterwards: “Winning against Rafa on clay is extremely difficult, one of the hardest things in tennis.”

This came a year after Mats Wilander had refused to coach Murray.

Murray would repeat this feat the following year in the semi-finals of the same event.
