Spain have made their first Davis Cup final since 2019 after they narrowly defeated Germany in the semi-final.

Spain will play Italy in the Davis Cup final after wins for Pablo Carreno Busta and the doubles team Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martínez confirmed the victory.

Spain are without Carlos Alcaraz due to injury, while Jannik Sinner will also not be competing for Italy in the final.

Italy have won the tournament the last two years, but this will be Spain’s first final for six years after they won the tournament in 2019.

Rafael Nadal led the charge for Spain that year and he was particularly vocal after his nation picked up the victory.

Rafael Nadal was stunned by the fans at the Davis Cup final in 2019

Nadal beat Denis Shapovalov in the final of the 2019 Davis Cup to help Spain win their sixth international title.

The tie took place in Spain at the usual home of the Madrid Open and Nadal was particularly taken with the crowd.

Speaking after the victory, the King of Clay said: “It has been an amazing week. A lot of things we went through: [the] father of Roberto passed away.

The Davis Cup has to make a change… which is your preference?

“Marcel [Granollers] stayed stiff with his lower back, and he couldn’t move. Pablo got injured in the singles.

“We went through a lot. I could not be happier. Have been unforgettable moments in this amazing stadium. The crowd was just a joke. We can’t thank them enough. Our team spirit prevailed; we fought hard.”

Nadal played several more times at the Davis Cup, but never won the tournament again. He retired at the event in 2024 after losing to Botic van de Zandschulp.

Spain and Italy’s Davis Cup records

Spain and Italy are two of the most illustrious sides in Davis Cup history, although they have only won nine titles between them.

Spain lead Italy with six victories in the Davis Cup, while Italy have only won the title three times in their history, with two of them coming in 2023 and 2024.

Italy have reached six further finals, with their most recent loss coming in 1998 to a Sweden led by Magnus Norman, Jonas Bjorkman, Magnus Gustafsson.

Spain’s success in the Davis Cup, however, has all taken place in very recent history. The nation’s six victories all took place between 2000 and 2019, with all but one of them featuring Nadal.
