Rafael Jodar has quickly emerged as the brightest young talent on the ATP Tour.

The young Spaniard, who only turned professional at the start of this year, won his first ATP Tour title earlier this month in Marrakech.

Jodar has continued his fine form in Madrid, reaching the round of 16 on debut.

On Sunday, Jodar announced himself to the tennis community, defeating fellow rising star Joao Fonseca 7-6, 4-6, 6-1.

By doing so, Jodar has joined an exclusive group alongside fellow South American Juan Martin del Potro.

Rafael Jodar is the second teenage wildcard to reach the Madrid Open round of 16

As per statisticians OptaAce, Rafael Jodar is now just the second teenage wildcard to reach the round of 16 at the Madrid Open.

The first player to do so was Juan Martin del Potro, who achieved the feat in 2007.

Del Potro, 18 years old at the time, defeated Potito Starace and Tommy Robredo before losing to compatriot David Nalbandian in the round of 16.

Nalbandian went on to win the event, defeating Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer in his last three rounds.

Returning to Jodar, the Spaniard has the opportunity to achieve what Del Potro could not by reaching the Madrid Open quarter-finals as a teenage wildcard.

In the fourth round, Jodar will play world number 66 Vit Kopriva.

If the youngster defeats his Czech opponent, he will play Jannik Sinner or Cameron Norrie in the quarter-finals.

Rafael Jodar’s projected Madrid Open draw

Speaking before Jodar’s victory over Fonseca, Sinner discussed Jodar’s game.

Jodar is a very clean hitter, very easy power,” the world number one told reporters in Madrid.

“You can hear with the sound when he touches… good sound coming from the racket and he’s very, very talented so he’s going to be a great, great player in the future.”
