Novak Djokovic’s fairytale Australian Open campaign has come to an end, thwarted in the final by Carlos Alcaraz.

His bid to create history by winning a 25th Grand Slam title seemed destined to come to fruition at this event, after the fortune he was afforded throughout the draw.

Then, when he shocked the world to beat Jannik Sinner in a five-set semi-final epic, it really felt like nothing could stop him.

Alas, with so much on the line, Carlos Alcaraz was not to be denied. In winning this trophy, he has become the youngest player in tennis history to complete the career Grand Slam.

Can Carlos Alcaraz win MORE Grand Slams than Novak Djokovic? 🤔

What made this even more special was who was in attendance, as Rafael Nadal watched his young compatriot topple his legendary rival, and even managed to have a small chat with Novak Djokovic mid-match.

That being said, the conversation was fairly one-sided, as the 38-year-old looked up to the Spaniard with a smile on his face.

In a moment captured by the Australian Open’s official X account, they actually relayed exactly what Djokovic said to his long-time rival.

It was a simple message, and one that outlined just how tough this match had been: “Do you wanna play?”

Djokovic’s post-match speech was remarkably upbeat, as he spoke glowingly about both Alcaraz and Nadal.

He may not lose often, but the Serbian superstar might just be one of the most gracious losers in the sport.

Alcaraz has matched a legendary Bjorn Borg record by winning this Australian Open title, and is expected to continue creating history as the years go on.

Novak Djokovic should be inspired by his Australian Open run

This tournament may be one of heartbreak for Djokovic, given how close he came to a 25th major title.

However, he should depart Melbourne full of so much pride and confidence in his ability to compete at the highest level.

Should Djokovic retire whatever happens in the Australian Open final and go out in a blaze of glory?

Beating Jannik Sinner laid down a marker, and when he took the first set off Alcaraz in the final, it really felt like he was going to do the impossible.

Hopefully, he can move on from this disappointing defeat with the knowledge that he can still compete, and he can still trouble the two best players on the planet.

Djokovic will surely now be targeting Wimbledon as a golden opportunity for him to do what he failed to do earlier today, fitness permitting.
