Jannik Sinner narrowly avoided disaster during his third-round match at the Australian Open.
Sinner was struggling physically against Eliot Spizzirri as the temperatures soared in Melbourne; cramping due to the overwhelming heat in Rod Laver Arena.
Sinner was struggling to move as a consequence, and found himself trailing Spizzirri 1-3 in the third set after splitting the first two sets against the American.
Fortunately for Sinner, the Australian Open heat rule came into effect, allowing the Italian to take a breather.
Sinner returned to the court rejuvenated and eventually defeated Spizzirri 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
Who would win this legendary showdown?
It was a miraculous recovery from Sinner, who admitted after the match that he had been ‘lucky’ with the timing of the heat rule.
Darren Cahill, Sinner’s longtime coach, has been credited as an instrumental figure in assisting the Italian through his physical concerns during the match.
Brad Gilbert praises Darren Cahill’s encouragement of Jannik Sinner
Brad Gilbert, the former coach of Coco Gauff, has weighed in on Darren Cahill’s influence on Jannik Sinner as the Italian battled extreme weather conditions in Melbourne.
Cahill was heard giving advice to Sinner midway through the third set; something which has been praised by Gilbert.
“I always give a game ball to the player, but do you know what yesterday’s game ball goes out to my buddy coach killer [Darren] Cahill,” Gilbert said in a post on X [formerly Twitter.]
“Normally it’s [Simone] Vagnozzi who does all the talk in the Sinner match and killer gives Vagnozzi input and then he says something, occasionally Darren says something or he gets up and does a little clap.
“But early in that third set when it was 1-3 and he knew his player was in trouble, it was killer who got up and he was the one being vocal about, ‘Come on mate, let’s get through these next few games. Manage yourself.’

“And it was his kind of subtle words, giving him the confidence without like getting too much into the X’s and O’s, which I think helped relax Sinner, helped him focus on what he needed to do, get that second wind and ultimately get the win.
“So full props to killer, coaching matters…”
Sinner, the two-time defending Australian Open champion, will face compatriot Luciano Darderi in the fourth round. Darderi, the 22nd seed, defeated Karen Khachanov in the third round.
Jannik Sinner’s durability is a worry ahead of his match against Luciano Darderi
There can be little doubt that Jannik Sinner is one of the most exceptional physical athletes on the planet.
However, he has frequently displayed consistent troubling physical issues when presented with tough weather conditions.
Last year, Sinner was forced to withdraw from his Shanghai Masters match against Tallon Griekspoor after suffering with cramp amid extreme humidity.

The Italian also suffered with cramp during the Vienna Open final against Alexander Zverev.
Sinner’s physical issues are a concern; and they could cost him the 2026 Australian Open title.
