What Carlos Alcaraz said he hoped Roger Federer would do for him after he won his first-round Wimbledon match in 2023

Carlos Alcaraz is well on his way to emulating Roger Federer’s legacy at Wimbledon.

After all, the Swiss superstar burst onto the scene at the All-England Club when he was just 21, winning his first Grand Slam title.

He would then go on to win the next four, marking an era of dominance that SW19 hadn’t seen since Pete Sampras and even Bjorn Borg before him.

Roger Federer had arrived, and by the time he called time on his glittering career, had racked up a record eight Wimbledon titles.

As such, he is supremely well-respected around these parts and beyond, with Carlos Alcaraz one of his many fans. It is for this reason that the Spaniard is so desperate to have Federer do one thing for him.

What Carlos Alcaraz is still hoping Roger Federer will do for him at Wimbledon

Back in 2023, as Alcaraz began his Wimbledon campaign, he had just one Grand Slam title to his name.

Few would have expected him to add another four to his résumé over the next two years, and now be poised to win a third straight title at the All-England Club.

And yet, despite this success, he remains as humble as he was back in 2023 when he was begging Federer to come and watch his matches.

Having seen that the 42-year-old was at the grounds but instead in the Centre Court Royal Box rather than on Court One, where he was playing, Alcaraz admitted: ‘After the match, I was with the phone checking everything I have, all the stories, all the posts, I saw that Roger Federer was here. I was a little bit jealous.

‘Honestly, I want Roger Federer to watch one of my matches obviously. I wish to talk a little bit with him. For me would be amazing.

‘I hope to see him around more than once.’

Carlos Alcaraz is on his way to breaking Roger Federer’s Wimbledon record

As noted earlier, Alcaraz is well on his way to Federer’s coveted eight Wimbledon titles.

It is a figure that Novak Djokovic has been chasing for some time, and ironically it’s the 22-year-old who continues to thwart him, beating the Serbian in consecutive finals now last year and the year before that.

But, whilst he prevents the 39-year-old from matching Federer’s record, it actually brings him one step closer to potentially usurping it himself.

If he wins this year’s trophy, he will have three Wimbledon trophies by the age of 22, and thus actually be one year ahead of schedule when compared to Federer’s Wimbledon performance at his age.

This is especially clear when comparing Alcaraz’s record on grass to Federer, Djokovic and other tennis legends.
