Wawrinka stunned by Cipolla

Both players found their serve under pressure in a keenly-contested first set before the Italian prevailed after he twice broke Wawrinka.

The second was a completely different prospect, though, as Cipolla brushed aside his opponent to set up a second-round clash with German Bjorn Phau.

Top seed Nikolay Davydenko, on the other hand, opened his bid in comfortable fashion with a routine straight-sets victory over Austrian Daniel Koellerer.

The Russian eased past his opponent 6-2 6-3 in 71 minutes on centre court to tee up a second-round clash with Lukas Dlouhny.

Davydenko never faced a break point and fired down eight aces as he avoided a repeat of his only other appearance at the tournament eight years ago, when he went out to Byron Black in the first round.

Carlos Moya, however, endured a tougher time against qualifier Danai Udomchoke. The sixth seed took the first set 6-3 but was taken to a tie-break in the second by his plucky Thai opponent, who saved three of four break points in the set, before the Spaniard eventually triumphed 7-6 (7/4).

Fourth seed Ivo Karlovic had no such problems as the big-serving Croatian fired down 10 aces on his way to a 6-4 6-3 victory against American qualifier Rajeev Ram.

Seventh-seeded Serbian Janko Tipsarevic saw off Spain’s Pablo Andujar also in straight sets, 6-3 6-2, while German Andreas Beck crushed Roko Karanusic 6-1 6-0 to set-up a second-round meeting with eighth seed Marcel Granollers.

Denis Istomin next faces third seed Marin Cilic after the Uzbek battled past Indian qualifier Rohan Bopanna 6-4 7-6 (7/3) and Czech Ivo Minar also progressed with a 6-3 6-0 triumph over American Wayne Odesnik.
