The 17-year-old from Guernsey, who anticipates turning professional by the end of the year, battled past second seed South 7-6 6-2 in the first round of the US dollars 50,000 event and will now face France’s Kristina Mladenovic, the Junior French Open champion.

Former Junior Wimbledon champion Laura Robson could not emulate Watson, however, the 15-year-old losing 6-4 7-6 in another all-British clash against Naomi Cavaday.

Robson said: “I thought my performance was good. It could have been better on how many mistakes I made and how many first serves I made but I thought it was a solid match and I thought she played really well.”
