Valentin Vacherot produced one of the greatest runs in tennis history to win his maiden Masters 1000 title at the Shanghai Masters.

Vacherot, who was ranked 204 in the world, became the lowest-ranked Masters 1000 champion following his victory over his cousin, Arthur Rinderknech, in the final.

Vacherot defeated Alexander Bublik, Holger Rune and Novak Djokovic on his way to the final. Djokovic told the Monegasque star his level was ‘extraordinary’ after their clash.

The 26-year-old became just the third qualifier to win a Masters 1000 title and rose to world number 40 as a result.

Now that the dust has settled on his victory, Vacherot has reacted to his historic triumph on social media.

Valentin Vacherot says his Shanghai Masters triumph feels ‘surreal’

The Monegasque player expressed his shock regarding his triumph in Shanghai, noting the influence of his team and friends, while sending his love to Arthur Rinderknech.

Vacherot defeated Rinderknech 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the final.

On Instagram, Vacherot said: “Shanghai Masters 1000. Surreal.

“No words can describe this feeling. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to my team, my family, my friends, the tournament, and everyone who has supported me to this point. It’s beyond my wildest dreams.

“Love you Arthur Rinderknech.”

Whether the 26-year-old can continue to shine on the ATP Tour remains to be seen. Vacherot certainly proved his worth in Shanghai, but maintaining his status as an elite ATP Tour player will come with another set of challenges that will need to be navigated.

Arthur Rinderknech sends message

Arthur Rinderknech, the Shanghai Masters finalist, posted a message on Instagram reflecting on his time in China.

He said: Thank you very much to the China Open and Shanghai Masters for this atmosphere incroyable [incredible].

“Huge congratulations to my lovely cousin Valentin Vacherot. We brought home two cups.

“The work continues with the team.”

Rinderknech has much to be proud of following his appearance in the Shanghai Masters final. He defeated several elite ATP Tour players on his way to the final, including Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev.

Consequently, the Frenchman has moved up to world number 28 and could qualify for a Grand Slam as a seeded player for the first time in his career.
