While Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray were progressing in the mens singles, arguably the biggest match of the day for the home fans at least was the Venus-Serena showdown.

The good news for everyone was that it lived up to its billing and the sisters produced some dazzling tennis during two tie-break sets.

This time it was Serenas turn to triumph, avenging her Wimbledon final defeat at the hands of her older sister thanks to a 7-6(6), 7-6(7) scoreline.

Venus will feel the match should have been hers, though – she missed two set points to take a one-set lead and another eight in the second.

Next shell meet Russian powerhouse Dinara Safina, who outplayed and outclassed Italys surprise quarter-finalist Flavia Pennetta 6-2, 6-3.

I think we played a great match today, Serena said afterwards. I think it just boiled down to one point here and there. It could have went anywhere.
