Tsonga managed just one break of serve in the entire match against fellow Frenchman Josselin Ouanna, a lucky loser from qualifying, eventually prevailing 7-6 (11/9) 6-4.

Earlier in the day, Tommy Robredo and Marcos Baghdatis were both eliminated in the second round.

Fourth seed Robredo fell to Germany’s Mischa Zverev, who ended a six-match losing streak with his first-round victory on Monday and followed that up by beating his Spanish opponent 6-2 3-6 6-1 to reach the last eight.

Baghdatis, seeded seventh, lost 7-6 (8/6) 6-4 to home hope Michael Llodra, who is again showing good form in Marseille after reaching the final last year.

In an all-French clash, eighth seed Julien Benneteau beat Florent Serra 6-4 6-4 while, in the first round, Belgian qualifier Yannick Mertens defeated Jan Hajek 7-6 (10/8) 6-1.
