Novak Djokovic’s chances of winning a 25th Grand Slam title grow slimmer with each passing year.
After all, as he ages and his body begins to break down more and more often, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner are only growing stronger, both physically and mentally.
However, having already reached one major final this year, few are rushing to completely discount the 39-year-old’s chances.
History has proven that it would be foolish to write off this legendary champion.
Will you still be watching the Madrid Open?
Two BIG withdrawals…
Alas, in a recent interview with Mundo Deportivo, that seems to be exactly what Toni Nadal has now done.
Toni Nadal rates Novak Djokovic’s Grand Slam chances
Discussing the great rival of his nephew, Rafael Nadal, Toni admitted that he finds it hard to imagine Novak Djokovic bypassing both Alcaraz and Sinner to win his 25th Grand Slam.
The Spaniard even used the recent run at the Australian Open as an example against Djokovic’s chances, claiming: “I find it difficult for him to win another Grand Slam.
Novak Djokovic is the tennis GOAT… Prove us wrong
“He beat Sinner in Australia, but not Alcaraz in the final. I think Sinner didn’t have a very good day; he didn’t have a great tournament. Djokovic, who is exceptional, knew how to take advantage of it. In the final, he played an incredible first set, but he cannot maintain that rhythm for two hours against Alcaraz.
“He can still play at a very high level, but the problem is maintaining it. Against players like Alcaraz, it’s not enough to play well for a set or a moment. You have to keep that level for a long time, and that’s where I see the difficulty.”
Alcaraz said if he thought Djokovic could reach another major final after their Australian Open showdown recently, and it seems that whilst Nadal has written him off, his fellow professionals on the ATP Tour have not.
What Novak Djokovic has said about winning a 25th Grand Slam title
Unsurprisingly, Djokovic remains enthusiastic when asked about his own chances of breaking the record, even if he admits that recent years have scarred him.
Speaking at the back-end of last year with Piers Morgan, he admitted: “I believe that to some extent I am the superman who can never injure myself, that can never be weak.
| Year | Event | Round reached | Defeated by |
| 2026 | Australian Open | Final | Carlos Alcaraz |
| 2025 | US Open | Semi-final | Carlos Alcaraz |
| 2025 | Wimbledon | Semi-final | Jannik Sinner |
| 2025 | Roland Garros | Semi-final | Jannik Sinner |
| 2025 | Australian Open | Semi-final | Alexander Zverev [ret] |
“But I got a slap from reality in the last couple of years. I’m just getting to know this new chapter.”
However, despite this ‘slap’, he retained his classic indignant stance: “I do have doubts that I can win Slams against these two guys [Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner]. But when I enter the court, I don’t care who’s across the net.
“I always believe I’m better and I deserve to win.”
