Tim Henman explains why Novak Djokovic could be in a ‘nightmare’ situation if he plays the ATP Finals

Novak Djokovic has still not confirmed whether he will play the ATP Finals with just days to go until the event.

The star is qualified for the year-end event he’s won a record-setting seven times as he still stands at number four in the rankings despite his limited schedule on the ATP Tour.

The Serbian is currently playing the Hellenic Championships, where he has reached the semi-finals of the tournament.

Tim Henman has suggested that Djokovic could be in trouble if he reaches the final of the Greek tournament and commits to playing the ATP Finals.

Tim Henman warns Novak Djokovic about the ATP Finals

Only six players have confirmed their status for the ATP Finals, with Felix Auger-Aliassime and Lorenzo Musetti still fighting it out for the final place.

Musetti is playing in Greece and needs to win to usurp Auger-Aliassime, but it could cause issues with the ATP Finals schedule.

Laura Robson and Henman have expressed their concern for both Djokovic and Musetti if they reach the finals in Athens.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Robson said: “So obviously Novak Djokovic is in Athens, so is Lorenzo Musetti. One of them, should Lorenzo qualify, will have to play Sunday. I don’t know what the organisers do.”

Henman agreed, dubbing the scheduling in Turin a ‘nightmare’. “One of them has got to play on the Sunday, but they’re playing Saturday. Do they get out Saturday night? They arrive Sunday morning, and they’ve got to play. It’s very difficult.

Robson followed up with: “They’ve got to get there first after today’s matches, but still, if you’re trying to plan Sunday’s schedule to release to ticket holders in Turin, I think it gets quite complicated.”

Djokovic plays Yannick Hanfmann in the Athens semi-final, while Musetti needs to get past Sebastian Korda to keep his ATP Finals hopes alive.

Why is Novak Djokovic playing an ATP 250 event so close to the Finals?

Djokovic does not play many ATP 250 events, with his only other event in 2025 coming in Geneva, which saw him win his 100th career title.

The main reason Djokovic is playing the Athens tournament is that it’s run by his family, after they took the license on from their previous tournament in Belgrade.

Speaking at the event, Djokovic explained his motivations behind playing the inaugural event of the Greek tournament.

“I hope that you guys are as excited as I am and all the players to play in Athens, that has the ATP tournament back again after 30 years.

“There is a great excitement…this arena being one of the most famous basketball arenas in the world, home of Panathinaikos, one of the best clubs in Europe.

“[It’s] such a historic venue, and it’s a great honour and great pleasure to be here. I’m very excited to see you all fill up this amazing stadium and hopefully watch some world-class tennis.”

Djokovic has defeated Alejandro Tabilo and Nuno Borges so far at the tournament.
