Jessica Pegula won her first WTA 1000 event since 2024 by defeating Elina Svitolina at the Dubai Championships.
Pegula was inspired against Svitolina and her win ensured that there has been a different winner at every WTA event so far this season.
The WTA Tour has never been as competitive as it is currently and Pegula’s impressive win has only proved that.
Pegula’s victory at the Dubai Tennis Championships has thrown up three remarkable facts that prove exactly why the WTA Tour is better than ever.

Nine of the WTA top 10 currently holds a major title
Pegula’s victory at the Dubai Tennis Championships means that every player inside the WTA Tour top 10 now holds a major title.
While Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek are far and away the best two players by ranking, every top player has proved they have what it takes to win a big title.
How do you rate Jessica Pegula’s chances of ever winning a Grand Slam?
In contrast, the ATP Tour top 10 currently only boasts three major winners over the last year, with Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, and Ben Shelton.
- Aryna Sabalenka: US Open, Madrid Open, Miami Open.
- Iga Swiatek: Cincinnati Open, Wimbledon,
- Elena Rybakina: Australian Open, WTA Finals,
- Coco Gauff: Roland Garros, Wuhan Open
- Jessica Pegula: Dubai Tennis Championships
- Amanda Anisimova: China Open
- Jasmine Paolini: Italian Open
- Mirra Andreeva: Indian Wells
- Victoria Mboko: 2025 Canadian Open
Svitolina, who has just returned to the WTA Tour, is the only player currently inside the top 10 who hasn’t won a major in the last year.
She reached the final of Dubai however, as well as the semi-finals of the Australian Open.
Each of the WTA Tour top four are current Grand Slam holders
The best four players on the WTA Tour – Sabalenka, Swiatek, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina – are certainly there for a reason too.
The four players all currently hold a Grand Slam, and the same cannot be said on the men’s tour.
Who wins more Grand Slams in their career – Elena Rybakina or Aryna Sabalenka?
Swiatek is the Wimbledon champion, Sabalenka won the US Open, Gauff is the Roland Garros champion, and Rybakina recently lifted the Australian Open title.
On the men’s draw, world number three Novak Djokovic has not won a major since the 2023 US Open, although he has been challenging at the latter stages, having most recently reached the Australian Open final.
Alexander Zverev, at world number four, however, is still yet to claim the first Grand Slam of his career.
Jessica Pegula has more points than Simona Halep when she was world number one
Pegula has been incredibly consistent on the WTA Tour over the past six months, racking up several semi-finals at major events.
Her victory at the Dubai Tennis Championships has helped her crack over 6700 ranking points on the WTA Tour.
Do you think women should play best-of-five set matches?
The number is still not enough for the American to crack the top four of the rankings, such is the competitiveness of the WTA Tour.
For comparison, former world number one Simona Halep once reached the summit of the WTA Tour with just 5675 points.
It has never been more difficult to fight at the top of the WTA Tour and there has never been tougher competition.
