The US Open now needs to make a change to one fan-related rule after Amanda Anisimova’s thrilling win over Naomi Osaka

The US Open has been an enthralling, impressive tournament, yet again.

However, as is almost always the case with these Grand Slams, there are fresh concerns emerging regarding the fans that could revolutionise their experience, and those watching from home.

After all, it is the supporters who truly empower these events, and prioritising them should always be a priority.

This issue was made brutally clear during Amanda Anisimova’s win over Naomi Osaka, where the many empty seats, in what was a remarkable showdown, gave an unfair impression of the intrigue surrounding this match.

That is, despite Osaka saying something unfortunate happened to her during the clash.

US Open told to allow fan movement

After all, despite the quality of this match-up, there were inexplicable gaps within the stands that almost downplayed how enjoyable this clash was.

As a fix for this, some have called for the sanctioning of fan movement to allow those higher up to move down, thus filling those barren areas.

One tennis podcaster, Myles David, even wrote on X: “It’s not fun to see so many empty rows of seats around the lower bowl in Arthur Ashe Stadium.

“After a certain point people should be able to come down and fill those up regardless of what their original purchase was.

“It could definitely help create a warmer atmosphere.”

It’s a clever suggestion that would solve plenty of problems going forward.

This problem affected Amanda Anisimova’s win over Naomi Osaka

Whilst this issue was not solely the fault of the US Open’s organisers, the solution was available.

But, given that they squeezed a Venus Williams-related ceremony in between the women’s semi-final, it did not help the engagement of fans.

After all, it had already been a long day, and having seen one thrilling semi-finals, many could be forgiven for rushing home before Anisimova faced Osaka.

Sadly, it made for some rather unsavoury screenshots, with plenty of areas in the stands barren despite the quality and drama of the affair.

If they had let fans flood down to fill those gaps, at the very least, it would have helped increase the atmosphere and the optics for those camera shots of the first few rows.

Perhaps this could be a smart move for the US Open, and even other Grand Slams, to undertake in the future.
