The three ATP players who have the most to prove ahead of the US Open

Jannik Sinner reasserted his dominance over the ATP Tour landscape last week.

The world number one is now a winner of five Grand Slam titles after beating Alexander Zverev 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the Wimbledon final.

Will Jannik Sinner still be on top?

Sinner has won back-to-back titles in south-west London; the tenth man to do so in the Open Era.

With Wimbledon out of the way, players will now focus their attention on the US Open.

A number of players have a lot to prove ahead of the final Grand Slam event of the year.

Ben Shelton

Shelton enjoyed an excellent start to his 2026 campaign, picking up titles in Mexico and Germany.

However, since winning the Munich Open in April, Shelton’s form has dipped significantly.

The American has been upset by lower-ranked opponents at multiple ATP events, including Daniel Altmaier and Raphael Collignon.

Most recently, Shelton was stunned in the Wimbledon first round by world number 140 Otto Virtanen.

“Tough loss. One of the toughest losses I’ve taken,” Shelton said afterwards, as per Reuters.

After such a poor period of form, Shelton must prove once again that he is a viable candidate for Grand Slam titles.

Daniil Medvedev

If one had to draw a picture of inconsistency, Daniil Medvedev’s face would emerge.

Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, has shown signs of returning to his very best form; as demonstrated by his barnstorming run to the Indian Wells final earlier this year.

However, as has been the case in recent times, Medvedev has been unable to maintain this form over long stretches.

Medvedev has endured multiple early exits at ATP events since March, losing to the likes of Adam Walton, Jan-Lennard Struff and Kamil Majchrzak.

Medvedev must relocate his best form ahead of the US Open, or risk suffering another early departure.

Alex de Minaur

De Minaur achieved a top five ranking for the first time this week, yet he has never advanced past the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam.

The ‘Demon’ has qualified for seven major quarter-finals; the last being at the 2026 Australian Open.

Since then, De Minaur has made just one quarter-final appearance across two Grand Slams and five Masters 1000 events.

He most recently lost in the Wimbledon fourth round to Flavio Cobolli, and stated afterwards that he would take a break from competition.

Yeah, I’m finding it harder. That’s the reality of it,” De Minaur admitted to reporters in London.

“Look, at the end of the day, I’ve got no other option, right? I’m not going to say, I’ve had enough, I’m hanging up the racquets.

“It’s fresh now. It hurts like hell now. But I’ll get back up. I’m a competitor, you know, through and through. So I’ll get back up, and I’ll give myself another chance.

“I just want it to kind of happen to keep giving me that hope. If not, this is a tough, tough sport to play with no hope.”
