Novak Djokovic picked up his 20th career win against Marin Cilic at the Shanghai Masters as the Croatian joins an elite list of six other players.

Djokovic is looking for his fifth Shanghai Masters crown and he began his campaign with a solid straight sets win over his old rival.

The two men were playing their 22nd match since their first in 2008, and Djokovic’s win at the Shanghai Masters saw the Serbian reach 20 wins against the 2014 US Open champion.

Djokovic holds that record against another six players on the ATP Tour, and he’s the only star to reach 20 or more wins against more than five players.

The seven players Novak Djokovic has beaten the most on the ATP Tour

Cilic and Djokovic became the oldest pair to ever play a match at an ATP 1000 event and their longevity has allowed the Serbian to reach a landmark 20 wins against Cilic.

Cilic joins a list of legendary players, including Gael Monfils, Stanislas Wawrinka, Tomas Berdych, Andy Murray, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal.

Monfils has the unfortunate record of having the worst record against Djokovic with 20 losses without a single win.

Djokovic managed 21 wins against Wawrinka, but he did lose six times to the three-time Grand Slam champion.

The Serbian’s head-to-head record with the other members of the ‘big four’ was more competitive, but Djokovic still holds a positive record against each of them.

Djokovic leads his head-to-head with Murray by 25 wins to 11 losses, while he beat Federer 27 times out of their 50 matches.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion’s record against Nadal is his closest head-to-head record, having won 31 of their 60 matches together.

Novak Djokovic reaches landmark at the Shanghai Masters

Djokovic has an exceptional record at the Shanghai Masters and his win over Cilic ensured he reached a nice round number of wins.

The star’s latest victory was his 40th win at the competition he’s won on four occasions in 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2018.

The Serbian has lost just six times at the tournament, including the final defeat to Jannik Sinner at last year’s event.

Djokovic’s other losses at the tournament have come against Federer twice, Nikolay Davydenko, and Roberto Bautista Agut, and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
