American tennis might be as strong as it’s been for nearly two decades, but they are still yet to claim a male Grand Slam winner since 2003.
Andy Roddick was the last American male to win a Grand Slam, when he defeated Juan Carlos Ferrero in the US Open final in 2003.
Roddick reached a further three finals before his retirement, while Andre Agassi also reached the US Open final in 2005.
Since, it’s been sparse for American men’s hopes of lifting any of the four Grand Slams and, in 2014, Pete Sampras shared his reasoning behind the slump.

Pete Sampras said other nations were ‘hungrier’ than the United States
Speaking to the media at the Coca-Cola International Premier Tennis League in 2014, Sampras projected his bleak outlook on the state of American tennis.
“It looks a little bit on the slim side for American tennis. I don’t see anyone or really even know anyone that people talking about breaking through or even getting to the Top 10.
What is your bold prediction for the 2026 tennis season?
“We gotta take small steps you know. We are not in the 90’s anymore. The game has become so international and so global these days and a lot of kids are playing tennis around the world.
“It’s tougher on the Americans. Maybe the other kids are just more hungrier and we are just not producing enough young pros with potential. Hopefully, it’s a phase and it won’t last too long.”
11 years later, and an American man has still not won a Grand Slam since Roddick’s victory at the US Open in 2003.
Taylor Fritz came closest after he reached the final of the 2024 US Open, but he was defeated by Jannik Sinner.
Which American man has the best chance of winning a Grand Slam?
Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz’s dominance at the top of the men’s game has not helped the United States’ quest for Grand Slam glory.
Fritz and Ben Shelton look the best bet for their nation, although they both have poor records against Sinner and Alcaraz.
If you were in charge of tennis, what is the first rule you would change?
Learner Tien enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2025, which included his very first ATP title, but he still looks a way off from the elite of the game.
Unless a major breakthrough happens with a younger player, America’s drought could continue for another decade.
