The ‘number one candidate’ to become Iga Swiatek’s next coach is emerging

Iga Swiatek remains without a coach, despite having split from Wim Fissette three days ago.

It’s clear that the Polish superstar was ready to move on, but did so without a contingency plan in place.

This leaves her in a tricky situation ahead of the clay-court season, where she will want to find consistency and stability as quickly as possible to ensure a successful few months.

Fortunately, Iga Swiatek does seem to be homing in on a successor, and it’s a name that most tennis fans will be familiar with.

The latest on Iga Swiatek’s coaching situation

In a report published by Polish outlet Przeglądu Sportowego Onet, they reveal the handful of names being considered for the prestigious role alongside a former world number one.

Whilst Carlos Moya is one coach being discussed, he is not the ‘number one candidate’ referenced in the piece.

They instead suggest that Francisco Roig, who recently split with Emma Raducanu, is the true favourite.

However, there remains one ‘problem’ that might prohibit this potential union, given the fact that the Spaniard is currently working with Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

If Swiatek came calling though, it would be a no-brainer for Roig to jump ship and return to the WTA, alongside one of the sport’s best players despite her recent struggles.

Francisco Roig’s play style could suit Iga Swiatek perfectly

Whilst Raducanu and Roig split because of a difference in opinions around how best to win tennis matches, it seems like the latter’s stance would align better with Swiatek, should he make the move.

After all, comments that the Brit made after her early Australian Open exit were indicative of the gulf between player and coach, as she claimed: “I want to be playing a different way. I just want to hit the ball to the corners and hard.

Do you think Iga Swiatek will win a Grand Slam this season?

“I feel like I’m doing all this variety, and it’s not doing what I want it to do. I need to work on playing in a way more similar to how I was playing when I was younger.”

The lack of aggression and desire for variety, whilst not suiting Raducanu, clearly would be a good fit for Swiatek.

She boasts great power, but perhaps not at the level of Elena Rybakina or Aryna Sabalenka.

This could therefore be the crucial factor that allows her to rise back up as a genuine threat to the world’s top two players, and again make her a contender for elite titles.
