The next British tennis star could be about to hit the big time after his recent success at the Soma Bay Open.

Charlie Robertson, aged 19, is ranked 688th in the world and was formerly ranked eighth on the ITF’s junior rankings.

The Brit, who reached the US Open Boys Singles semi-finals in 2024, has previously practiced with world number one Carlos Alcaraz.

Robertson, who plays for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons in America, could be the next British star in waiting if he continues to perform as he has done this week in Egypt.

Charlie Robertson has reached his first Challenger quarter-final

At 19 years old, Charlie Robertson has qualified for the Soma Bay Open quarter-finals.

Robertson, who entered the tournament via a ‘junior reserved’ spot, defeated Egypt’s Amr Elsayed 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the first round.

On Thursday, Robertson went one step further, beating Dominik Kellovsky 6-1 6-4 to reach his first ATP Challenger quarter-final.

In the semi-finals, the young star faces a tough test in the form of Dutchman Jelle Sels.

Sels, 30, has won one ATP Challenger Tour title, at the 2022 Mouilleron le Captif Open in France.

Charlie Robertson’s relationship with Andy Murray

In 2024, Robertson discussed his relationship with fellow Scotsman Andy Murray.

Robertson told the ATP Tour: “Seeing him, a Scotsman do it is so special for me obviously.

Being from Scotland, it’s unbelievable seeing a Scottish guy doing so well. So for me, it was always Andy.

“Andy’s always been my inspiration since I was little and to know that someone can do it from where you’ve trained and where he’s trained and grown up, it’s a massive inspiration.”

Robertson has also had the opportunity to be the hitting partner for both Murray and Carlos Alcaraz.

“It was quite special, Robertson said.

“Me and Andy built our relationship there, so that was very special and I also got the time to hit with Alcaraz, which I thought was really nice.

“It was only once, but he actually requested me again to hit with him, which was quite cool, but I actually had to go play a tournament myself!”

Judy Murray, the mother of Andy and Jamie, posted this message on social media in 2024.

“Charlie Robertson: the Scottish teenager following in Andy’s footsteps, heads to New York for the US Open junior event next month,” Judy said on X [Twitter].

“He’s ranked 25 in the world and has just spent a week as Andy’s training partner. Investing in the next generation.”
