The bold prediction Andy Murray made about Jack Draper at Queen’s last year that has already come true

Jack Draper has taken the torch for British tennis with ease, impressively filling the vacancy left by Andy Murray following his 2024 retirement.

Last year saw the Scotsman bid farewell at nearly every event he entered, with many fearing, rather correctly, that it might have been his final leg on tour.

This became especially clear with the way in which Andy Murray was speaking, making predictions about the future as if he were not part of it.

One such premonition, made about compatriot Jack Draper at the Queen’s Club Championships this time last year, has already proven fruitful.

What Andy Murray once predicted about Jack Draper?

Murray’s praise for his young compatriot came after Draper had become the new British number one, around this time last year.

In doing so, he actually became the youngest to do so since Murray himself in 2009.

Speaking about that achievement, the 38-year-old then predicted: ‘Jack, I think, has bigger goals to aspire to than being British number one,” said former world number one Murray.

‘In my opinion, he can get right up to the top of the game, right to the top of the world rankings.’

This led Draper to respond: ‘It’s amazing to hear that from someone like Andy,” said Draper during a news conference at Queen’s Club on Monday.

‘Being the number one Brit is a huge honour and a huge privilege, I know, but I hadn’t thought about that at all.

‘My goal is to be one of the top players in the world.’

It’s fair to say that, sitting fourth in the world rankings having reached a Grand Slam semi-final and won a Masters 1000 title, he’s already succeeded in that regard.

And now, Greg Rusedski has made his prediction about Draper’s Wimbledon chances too, expecting big things.

Jack Draper is on track to compete for it all

It’s been remarkable how Draper has risen from a year ago to today, really capitalising on his form and fitness.

After all, the latter once seemed like a dream he would never reach, suffering from regular injuries that constantly hampered his progress and even ruled him out of the entire grass-court season in 2023.

But, not to be deterred, he has used his time efficiently to rebuild his body into the machine it is today. Relentless, reliable and so imposing for his opponents.

This not only helped him to impress on the hard courts, but also translate his game onto clay as well, where he reached the final in Madrid whilst also soaring into the fourth round at Roland Garros.

Now back on his favoured grass, before returning to New York where he played so well last year too, Draper can once again prove to everyone that he is a threat for every tournament he enters.
