The alarming statistic for Jessica Pegula as she targets her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon this year

Jessica Pegula has a big obstacle to overcome if she is to challenge for the Wimbledon title this year.

Pegula is the current world number four and automatically one of the leading contenders for Grand Slam titles, including Wimbledon.

The American is also coming into Wimbledon with some form this year, with Pegula reaching the Berlin Open final last week after beating world number one Aryna Sabalenka.

Despite the many reasons why Pegula should be one of the Wimbledon favourites, there is an alarming statistic that could cause concern for her ahead of this year’s tournament.

Jessica Pegula has never beaten a top 40 player at Wimbledon before

Pegula is a former Wimbledon quarter-finalist, but it is statistically her worst Grand Slam in terms of win-loss record.

In her six previous main draw appearances at Wimbledon, Pegula has only been past the third round once.

2022Third Round

Pegula has won eight of her 14 singles matches at Wimbledon, and it is the ranking of the players she has beaten that strikes concern.

From the eight victories Pegula has obtained at Wimbledon, the highest-ranked player she has beaten is Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who was the world number 43 at the time of the 2023 tournament.

Pegula’s two other highest-ranked wins at Wimbledon are Lauren Davis (No.46 – 2023) and Lesia Tsurenko (No.60 – 2023).

The average ranking of the eight opponents Pegula has beaten at Wimbledon is 74.4, striking concern about whether she can beat the best players at the grass court major.

Pegula has produced her best grass court results in Germany, but has never played anyone ranked higher than the world number 42 at Wimbledon.

Marketa Vondrousova beat Pegula en route to winning the Wimbledon title in 2023, while Xinyu Wang beat her at the 2024 tournament with the same ranking.

Who is the last American woman to win the Wimbledon singles title?

Wimbledon has been dominated by American women throughout history, with Martina Navratilova, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Billie Jean King and Chris Evert all winning multiple titles at the tournament.

However, an American woman has not won the Wimbledon singles title since 2016, when Serena lifted her seventh title at SW19.

Both Serena and Venus Williams have been in the Wimbledon final since then, as well as Amanda Anisimova losing to Iga Swiatek in the championship match last year.

How do you rate Jessica Pegula’s chances of ever winning a Grand Slam?

Neither Anisimova nor Coco Gauff have had good preparation coming into Wimbledon this year, with Pegula the frontrunning American in the women’s singles draw.

The main draw of Wimbledon will get underway on Monday, June 29, with Serena Williams making her singles return after nearly four years.
