“That’s not nice” – Daniil Medvedev calls out a Nick Kyrgios team member for distraction he ‘hopes’ wasn’t deliberate

Daniil Medvedev was knocked out of the US Open by Nick Kyrgios but the match wasn’t without controversy including an incident involving the Australian’s support team that the Russian wasn’t impressed about

Daniil Medvedev will no longer be world No.1 after suffering a fourth defeat in five meetings to Nick Kyrgios but it was an intervention from one of the Kyrgios support team that seems to have riled Medvedev more than anything.

At 5-6 down in the first set Medvedev had missed his first serve and was about to hit his second serve when he heard someone from the Kyrgios support seats call out ‘C’mon get him’ which distracted the top seed and caused him to mention it to both the umpire and to Kyrgios after the match.

When quizzed about the incident in his post match press conference Medvedev said,

“It was 6-5 for him, first set, 40-30 on my serve. Just before the second serve somebody from his box was, ‘C’mon, get him’.

“That’s not nice. You shouldn’t do it when you’re in the other’s box before the second serve. I told this to the umpire. I don’t know who exactly it was. People who I see from him, actually must be honest, I don’t know their names, but we just talked in the locker room. So I respect them like probably I respect almost every other team.

“But at the end of the match, I was like, ‘C’mon, he shouldn’t do it’. It was a man’s voice. It was only once, so probably also it was not like on purpose – I hope. So that’s fine.”

Nick Kyrgios will now play another Russian in Karon Khachanov in the quarter finals.
