Jannik Sinner won Indian Wells last time out and can complete the Sunshine Double if he wins in Miami.
He’ll compete as the number-two seed, but is he the favorite to win the title?

Sinner is the Miami Open favorite, but does he deserve that label?
Simply put, yes, he does.
The Italian is ‘technically’ the defending champion.
Admittedly, he isn’t actually the defending champion, Mensik is, but Sinner never lost the title he won in 2024.
Sinner was forced to skip last year’s Miami Open due to suspension.

Therefore, he hasn’t lost a match in Florida since 2023, 1082 days ago.
Looking past his 2024 triumph, Sinner has always performed well at the Miami Open.
He reached the final on debut in 2021, repeating the feat two years later.
Jannik Sinner’s record at the Miami Open
- 2021 Miami Open – Lost in the final to Hubert Hurkacz
- 2022 Miami Open – Lost in the quarterfinals to Francisco Cerundolo
- 2023 Miami Open – Lost in the final to Daniil Medvedev
- 2024 Miami Open – Champion
- 2025 Miami Open – Did not play
The numbers certainly point towards Sinner winning in 2026, but there’s a reason so few players complete the Sunshine Double…
Who was the last man to complete the Sunshine Double?
Winning the Sunshine Double is one of the sport’s most difficult tasks.
To win two events, back-to-back, in vastly different conditions, is a real challenge.
And is one that only a handful of players have completed.
The last player to do so was Roger Federer, back in 2017.
| Year | Indian Wells winner | Miami Open performance | Miami Open winner |
| 2025 | Jack Draper | Lost in 2R | Jakub Mensik |
| 2024 | Carlos Alcaraz | Lost in QF | Jannik Sinner |
| 2023 | Carlos Alcaraz | Lost in SF | Daniil Medvedev |
| 2022 | Taylor Fritz | Lost in 4R | Carlos Alcaraz |
| 2021 (Miami Open played before Indian Wells) | Cameron Norrie | Lost in 3R | Hubert Hurkacz |
| 2019 | Dominic Thiem | Lost in 2R | Roger Federer |
| 2018 | Juan Martin del Potro | Lost in SF | John Isner |
| 2017 | Roger Federer | Winner | Roger Federer |
The Swiss legend won Indian Wells and the Miami Open in 2017, defeating Stan Wawrinka and Rafael Nadal in the finals.
- 2017 Indian Wells final – Roger Federer defeated Stan Wawrinka, 6-4, 7-5

- 2017 Miami Open final – Roger Federer defeated Rafael Nadal, 6-3, 6-4

Interestingly enough, Federer completed the fourth consecutive Sunshine Double.
In 2014, 2015 and 2016, Serbia’s Novak Djokovic won Indian Wells and the Miami Open.
All-time ‘Sunshine Double’ winners (Men’s singles)
- Novak Djokovic – 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016
- Roger Federer – 2005, 2006, 2017
- Andre Agassi – 2001
- Marcelo Rios – 1998
- Pete Sampras – 1994
- Michael Chang – 1992
- Jim Courier – 1991
Only time will tell if Sinner can add his name to that list in 2026…
He will begin his 2026 Miami Open campaign later this week against either Ignacio Buse or Damir Dzumhur.
