Emma Raducanu has enjoyed the best year of her career; one filled with progression both in her technical quality and her physical readiness.
It’s been so refreshing to see the British number one playing consistently, and at a very high level.
At present, it feels like only the very best players in the world are routinely stopping her now.
Emma Raducanu rarely suffers shock defeats to players she is not supposed to lose to.
However, with this progression in mind, she has been forced into making a somewhat awkward decision. Fortunately, the reactions suggest her final move was the correct one.
Emma Raducanu makes decision to skip Billie Jean King Cup tie
The decision in question was whether to travel to Seoul to compete in the Korea Open or if she should opt to fly to China to play for Great Britain in the Billie Jean King Cup.
Crucially, the latter only offers minimal ranking points, and puts her in a format that perhaps does not promote great progression.

Also, having only just really started working with Francisco Roig as her new coach, she will want as much time as possible to train solely with him and absorb whatever advice she can from the Spaniard.
With that in mind, Raducanu has chosen personal progression over representing her country, in a move that could have caused controversy.
Fortunately, the bulk of tennis fans are rushing to praise her champion’s mindset, around a week after Elena Rybakina rated Raducanu’s level after their US Open match.
Tennis fans praise Emma Raducanu’s move to prioritise her ranking
One X user would respond to this move by writing: “It’s a smart decision, she wants to improve her ranking and get seeded for AO.”
This was a notion backed up by plenty of others, who also were keen to show their support on the same platform.
Another fan echoed the earlier sentiment, adding: “Emma has a terrific 6-1 success in the BJK cup and I’m sure she’ll represent Team GB next year.
“I can understand her prioritising AO seeding tbh and it’s probably right that the team who got GB to the finals play the finals.”
It’s fair to say that, whilst some would argue this is a selfish move from Raducanu, it is definitely the smart one for her own progression.
With the momentum she has gathered throughout 2025, she absolutely deserves to try and keep it going in Korea.
