Teenager Keys gets debut win in Florida

The teenager from Florida came back from 5-2 in the first set to break Kudryavtseva twice. She lost the first game of the second set before going on a four-game run then taking the match with an ace after the 81st-ranked Kudryavtseva fought back to 4-5.

Her reward could be a match against the tournament’s top seed and the world number nine Nadia Petrova, who opens play later today against Olga Govortsova.

Elsewhere third seed Dominika Cibulkova eased past Edina Gallovits 6-2 6-2, while seventh-seeded Alona Bondarenko saw off Sania Mirza 6-4 6-3.

Kateryna Bondarenko beat Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic 7-6 (7/2) 6-2, and Patricia Meyr of Austria beat Japan’s Ayumi Morita 6-3 2-6 6-3.

Other ranked players in the field include number 12 Caroline Wozniacki, number 16 and last year’s runner up Dominka Cibulkova, and 43rd-ranked Daniela Hantuchova.

Reigning champion Maria Sharapova, is not participating at this event.
