Lorenzo Musetti’s hopes of ending a three-year title drought were put on hold after losing the Chengdu Open final in brutal circumstances.
Chilean qualifier Tabilo saved two match points in the third set before going on to defeat Musetti, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6.
The triumph marked Tabilo’s third title on the ATP Tour.
This result was a bitter blow for Musetti, who has now won fewer Tour titles than Tabilo.
Following the brutal loss, an emotional Musetti conveyed his thoughts to the Chengdu Open crowd.
Lorenzo Musetti reflects on Chengdu Open final loss

This loss for Musetti will hurt more than most; he has failed to win a title since the 2022 Naples Open.
Musetti, who was visibly emotional after the match, gathered his thoughts before addressing the Chengdu Open crowd.
“Tough night for me, we played a very intense match, we fought until the last point, but in the end there is only one winner,” Musetti said.
“Sometimes you win, other times you learn. […] It’s only a matter of time before I win another tournament.”
Later on, the Italian posted a message on Instagram illustrating his defiant attitude.
He said: “You are not DEFEATED when you lose.
“You are defeated when you QUIT.”
Musetti has lost five consecutive ATP Tour finals
Despite his status as one of the best players on the ATP Tour, Lorenzo Musetti has won just two Tour-level titles during his career.
These titles came three years ago, at the Naples Open and Hamburg Open.
Since then, Musetti has lost each of the five ATP Tour finals he has contested.
The first came at the 2024 Queen’s Club Championships, where he lost to American star Tommy Paul in the final.
Later in 2024, Musetti lost in the Umag Open final to Francisco Cerundolo, before losing his first Chengdu Open final at the hands of local star Shang Juncheng.
