Taylor Fritz is set to make his long-awaited return to the ATP Tour when he competes at the Geneva Open this week.
Fritz, the world number eight, has been nursing chronic knee tendonitis throughout this season, which has prevented him from competing in many of the Tour’s most prestigious events.
The American last played an ATP Tour match in March, losing to Jiri Lehecka in the Indian Wells fourth round.
As a result, Fritz has missed Masters 1000 events in Monte Carlo, Madrid and Rome.

Fritz is now set to make his return in Switzerland, and he has offered tennis fans some insight into the current state of his physical fitness.
Taylor Fritz updates tennis fans on the condition of his knee
“Yeah, it’s a lot better,” Fritz said of his knee while conducting his pre-tournament press conference.
“I’ve made a lot of improvement with it. Took [inaudible] time off just to strengthen it and I think the good news was, when I got it scanned when I got home after Miami it had already shown a lot of signs of improvement from when I had it scanned in the off season.
Taylor Fritz’s 2026 ATP season so far
- Australian Open – lost in the fourth round to Lorenzo Musetti
- Dallas Open – lost in the final to Ben Shelton
- Delray Beach Open – lost in the quarter-finals to Tommy Paul
- Indian Wells – lost in the third round to Alex Michelsen
- Miami – lost in the fourth round to Jiri Lehecka
“Because my original plan was to rehab through the off season and continue to rehab while also still playing matches and I wasn’t doing that, I wasn’t holding up well with the pain.
” But I guess that is the good news, that it was improving that whole time. I didn’t want to take as much time off as I did but in the end, the doctors told me you have six weeks, maybe I can finally get over the hill, and yeah, it’s not perfect but it’s never… it’s going to take time.
“But it’s at a level now where I feel like I can play and it doesn’t hurt and I can come back the next day and it doesn’t feel very aggravated. So it’s definitely very much improved.”

Fritz will make his first ATP appearance since March when he competes alongside Learner Tien in the Geneva Open Men’s Doubles event.
Fritz and Tien are scheduled to play fourth seeds Marcelo Melo and Andres Molteni at 12:40 pm GMT on Monday.
Fritz, the top seed in the singles draw, has received a bye through to the second round, where he will play Alexei Popyrin or qualifier Clement Tabur.
Fritz has a 1-1 record against Popyrin – a former Masters 1000 champion in Canada. Popyrin defeated Fritz in their last match at the 2023 Australian Open.

Fritz has never played Tabur on the ATP Tour.
Taylor Fritz’s last appearance in Geneva
At the 2025 Geneva Open, Fritz arrived at the event as the number one seed. As a result, he received a bye through to the second round.
There, he defeated Frenchman Quentin Halys, 6-4, 7-6.
Unfortunately for fans of the American, his run came to an end in the very next round, as he was defeated by former Masters 1000 champion Hubert Hurkacz.
Hurkacz, the sixth seed, defeated Fritz 6-3, 7-6 on the Geneva Open Centre Court.
Could a combination of Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, Joao Fonseca, and Alex de Minaur beat Jannik Sinner?
He's just too good!
Hurkacz went on to reach the final, before losing to Novak Djokovic in three close sets, 7-5, 6-7, 6-7.
