The unstoppable Ukrainian won the last eight games of the contest as she collected silverware for a 5th time in an impressive 2017 season.

It’s a landmark triumph for the 22-year-old as she has become the first player to win three Premier 5 titles – Dubai, Rome and Toronto – in a single campaign.

Svitolina, who will now turn his focus to the event in Cincinnati next week, leads the WTA race to Singapore and will be confirmed as the new world No.4 when the rankings are updated on Monday – a new career-high.

The Ukrainian had claimed both her previous clashes with the former world No.1 and there were a number of tight and tense games in the early stages. Neither player is particularly blessed with significant firepower, though, so the points were often lengthy and gruelling.

At 4-4 in the opener, Svitolina raised her level and the Dane failed to stay with her. The 22-year-old was perhaps a little fortunate to win the second set without conceding a game however there is little doubt that she has been the outstanding perfomer in Canada this week.

“This year has really been amazing and it’s very special for me to win the title,” said the new champion. “I’m very happy that it could happen here but well done to Caroline on a good week, she played some great tennis.”
