Suarez-Navarro gave the home crowd plenty to cheer with a battling three-set victory over Romania’s Sorana-Mihaela Cirstea in Marbella.
The fifth seed won the first set 6-2 but lost the second on a tie-break before regrouping to win the decider 6-2.
Second seed Jankovic later overcame another Spanish player, Anabel Medina Garrigues, in straight sets, the Serbian winning 7-5 6-2.
